ORGANISER

Nishi Chaya District

Art of Geisha specially invites 6 international visitors to join the annual summer festival in the Nishi Chaya District.

This is an occasion where Geiko invite their Japanese local regular customers to "Kenban", a building and facility where Geiko spend daily training,

to show appreciation to the regular customers who support the Geiko culture and community.

Come and join this fun, casual party where you will spend 90 minutes with more than 50 Japanese locals, while watching several Geiko dancing, playing traditional musical instruments, drinking sake and beer, and savouring a bento (Japanese meal in a box).

Everything will be in Japanese, but it's a perfect experience for those who want to immerse in a real local Japanese culture.

Enjoy conversation with Geiko and locals using a translation app!

The party is not widely open to the public, so please take this very rare opportunity to experience real Kanazawa!

WHAT IS KENBAN?

Kenban is a facility found in each of three Chaya Districts in Kanazawa. It has a role as an administrative office for Geiko and each district, as well as a place for their daily training where they hone their skills in dancing, singing, Japanese taiko drums, shamisen guitars, Japanese flutes, and so on.

The Kenban in Nishi Chaya District was built in 1922, about 102 years after the district was first established in 1820. It has been designated as a national tangible property in Japan since 2003.

WHAT IS NISHI CHAYA DISTRICT?

Nishi Chaya District is one of the three Chaya Districts in Kanazawa. The history of the district started in 1820, as an area controlled by samurai to provide Geiko entertainment to merchants and townspeople.

Today, the district is home to 5 teahouses (ochaya in Japanese) and a total of 15 Geiko.

The street is lined with buildings with beautiful wooden lattice windows. It is a quiet area that is only a short walking distance from the city centre, is is perfect for a stroll while enjoying sweet treats at some of the shops on the street.

WHAT IS THE SUMMER FESTIVAL?

The Geiko's summer festival is held annually at the Nishi Chaya District's Kenban. Unlike their private party at their teahouse (ochaya), around 10 Geiko in the district gather at Kenban to entertain their local regular customers with their beautiful performances, drinks and conversations to show appreciation for the continuous support they receive from the customers.

This is a casual, fun party but tickets are only available for the regular customers or those who have a connection with the Geiko or teahouses.
